Dear friends and family,We are emailing with some important news about our baby boy and to ask for your prayers for us. We would wait to tell you when we see you in person, but this coming week will be of great significance, and we feel we do not have the energy necessary to speak with each of you in person.

On Friday we went to the midwife for a routine 24 week appointment and ultrasound. They found a problem with our little guy’s brain. Our midwife immediately called the perinatal center at Abbott, which was closed, but she got the on call dr to agree to see us in the Maternal Assessment Center right away.

The doctor was incredibly kind to perform another ultrasound for us. He also is very concerned. It seems as though our boy suffered from an “event” some time within the past 4 weeks. It could have been a stroke or something similar. It squeezed his brain which has caused his brain tissue to stop growing. Therefore, he has a hole in the left side of his brain that is full of fluid.

It is impossible to know the impacts of this event on his life – life expectancy and mental handicaps. This week is significant because we will have a level 2 ultrasound and an MRI. We think they will try to identify exactly the size and location of the fluid to determine the functions impacted: will he not be able to talk? Will he not be able to walk? Will he not be able to walk, talk, or breathe?

Immediately when we heard the news God started playing these verses over and over in our heads. Jeremiah 2911 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.
13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

The incredible rarity of the situation was explained to us by the dr. It is not chromosomal, not genetic, not viral, not bacterial. It is very hard for us to imagine our baby in pain inside of Emily, but we are convinced that it is God who is knitting him together in her womb. When we got home from our 6 hours at the hospital, we decided to name our baby boy so we could pray for him by name. He is Henryk Otto Thiel.

So please pray-
1- That Henryk would survive in utero and after birth.
2- That God would give us more information on his condition so we might learn how best to care for him.
3- That God would give him the cognitive ability to understand the gospel in his life.
4- For miraculous healing, and faith on our part if God chooses the opposite.

You are the most important people in our lives, which is why we are sending this email. Please understand that we simply could not emotionally call you individually although we know that would have been the ideal.

Michael and Emily
